The San Beda Red Cubs reestablished their identity as the best high school team in the country as they, representing CALABARZON, defeated the NU Bullpups-led Team NCR, 86-80, in the championship game of the Palarong Pambansa Secondary Boys Basketball Tournament at the San Luis Sports Complex in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.
The Red Cubs, however, earned the win in a hard manner as the Bullpups crawled back from 22 points down to come to as close as two, 78-80, on back-to-back three pointers with less than two minutes left.
NCR had a huge chance of completing the comeback after CALABARZON lost the ball, but Cyprian Castillo missed a go-ahead three-point attempt.
Marc Diputado once again proved to be efficient in clutch moments as he drove hard to the rim in the ensuing play for a lay-in to bring the lead back to four, 82-78, with 32.8 seconds left.
Castillo got fouled in the next play and made two free throws to bring the lead back to two, but J.R. Gumtang put it back to four with his own two charities.
