Wazzup Pilipinas!
Based from his Facebook page, "Mike Unson is one of the very few Filipinos who performs wholesome live point-of-view (POV) stand-up comedy. Because of his wholesome approach to the craft of stand-up comedy, he has even been invited to do guest lectures, and performances in many schools, and has also dabbled into event hosting, doing weddings, private parties, and shows for major corporations proving that his brand of comedy can thrive in any given environment."
I have to agree with those lines because I personally witnessed how he delivered his humor to the appreciation of the crowd during the Laugh and Stack Open Mic Showdown of Comedy Cartel held at the Relik Tapas Bar and Lounge last July 12, 2014.
We were invited to watch the show but we got a special treat for coming in early. We were fortunate to meet Mike and his manager, and another friend, who were also there early. We got to chat with the guy and do an up-close intimate video interview. We learned so much about him that it actually made the night really more special since we have an exclusive - no cuts, no edits - interview with the guy whose "clever observations about the Filipino condition surpass the realm of mere insult comedy.”
The 37-year old stand-up comic who doesn't look 37 at all, is still single as of the day of the interview, but he didn't really declare if he was attached already. Lol!
He has a day job belonging to the creative team of a popular TV show from a large network that he won't mention too but browsing over the Internet actually revealed which one it was.
He would like to say that there is not much to earn for being a stand-up comic but his passion towards the art remains since he loves doing it not just for the money.
We got to see Mike in action as he made the crowd go bonkers with his numerous stories about everything around him from a probable situation with a Filipino taxi driver to the possibilities revolving around the upcoming Shaider movie.
As a headliner of the show, he certainly made a stunning presence after all the other jokes delivered by the other comics involved in the Open Mic Showdown. Listening to some of the not so successful punchlines of the other stand-up comics made Mike the savior of the night because at least majority of us are going home with smiles on our faces after those bountiful laughter.
I took a portion of his act that narrates a story about a probable scenario where a Filipino taxi driver was hailed by a cop to go in "hot pursuit" of a criminal. This was just one of the many humorous scenarios that made us really laugh a lot that night.
Mike Unson's comedy is truly commendable for it has totally steered away from the conventional humor that most comics use. I hate when comedians talk about the imperfections of others just to bring out laughter from the audience.
I saw him share the stage with Hollywood comedian and stand-up comic Rob Schneider during a show in Solaire Resort and Casino where I was invited to cover too. But unfortunately cameras were not allowed to be used so there were no souvenir photos or videos.

Thank you to Mike for giving us the privilege of capturing his thoughts on video and for making a special video invite for Wazzup Pilipinas. We hope to meet him again in his future gigs and may be help promote them as well.
