Upcoming Video Games of 2014

Playing video games is very popular and addicting to many because it involves a lot of challenging interaction spiced up with glaring 3D graphics and animation filled with amazing eye-candy. With the advancement of intuitive technology, more and more interaction is possible to make video game playing a very engaging experience.

Gone are the days when we are limited only to console or PC gaming because with smartphones becoming more affordable and an everyday necessity, we can now bring our games with us. The widespread internet access through free wi-fi hotspots all over several places like restaurants, hotels, and malls have also allowed us to play online. Several downloadable, and mostly free, gaming apps are accessible to everyone that traveling long hours on the road has become less boring.

2014 is said to be the a good year for gaming with the new next gen consoles released and a lot of games soon to hit the shelves of gaming stores and online digital distribution this year.

Here are some of the games I find interesting:

South Park: The Stick of Truth

South Park: The Stick of Truth is a turn-based role playing game based on the show South Park, which is one of my favorite TV shows because of its cynical humor. The game starts you off as the new kid in town where you're parents tell you to go make friends.

On the way, you meet Butters, a character in the show, swinging fake swords and casting imaginary spells at another character. The game kicks off from there. Butters introduces you to the famous Eric Cartman, the "king" in their little live-action role-playing game and he shows you "the stick of truth" (which is just a normal stick). The enemy faction takes the stick and you as the player is given the task of getting it back, alongside different characters like Kenny (on the left side of the picture) and Butters (on the right side of the picture).

Over time, the hilarious "children's" game turns into a battle of good and evil as you continue roaming the game, completing side-quests, making new friends and fighting off enemies. If you succeed in your quest to find the stick of truth, you'll be deemed as South Park's savior, but if you fail, you'll be forever known as South Park's biggest loser.

The creators of the game created a great rendition of the show, keeping it to its originality, sprinkling a bit of the hilarious characters here and there, placing hidden references and just making you feel like you're one of the characters in the show.

The game will be released on March 4, 2014 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and the PC.

Titanfall

Titanfall is a first-person shooter online multiplayer game, which also has that single player feel to it, with the NPC's in the background talking to you, the grunts or the AI's, and the plot of the game. The players are the pilots of a mech-style "walker" called the Titan. The game starts you off as you and your group (which can either be the Militia or the IMC) are on foot and fighting off an enemy group, waiting for your Titan to be deployed for better chances of winning while completing team-based objectives on a war-torn planet. The more you kill, the faster the Titan will be deployed, but if you die, it takes longer.

The game can accommodate up to twelve players, six each group. There are different classes for players and different types of Titans. You can also customize it to your own accord if you want a specific gun and a specific Titan for your character. There are also different game types like the classic mode, hardpoint, last titan standing and a lot more. The game itself is aesthetically beautiful and a ground-breaking FPS game.

Titanfall, a Windows exclusive game, will be released on March 11, 2014 for the XBox One and the PC. March 25, 2014 for the XBox 360.

The Elder Scrolls Online

The Elder Scrolls Online is a MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) which is the first open-ended multiplayer installment in the Elder Scrolls franchise. The game is indirectly connected to the series and takes place a millennium before Skyrim and 800 years before Morrowind and Oblivion. The game will take place in the continent of Tamriel, where you can create a player of different races with different types of classes to choose from. Sources say that the game won't be linear like the latter games and will give you a large world to explore, complete random quests and encounter random events.

The Elder Scrolls Online will be released on April 14, 2014 for the PC and the Mac, and later on June 2014 for the consoles.
Watch Dogs
© ubisoft

Watch Dogs is an open-world action-adventure video game where you play as Aiden Pearce, who can hack electronic devices tied with the CtOS or the central operating system with his mobile device. But, Aiden is not the only hacker in town, a lot of other hackers will try to hack into Aiden's phone to get the information collected throughout the game. The game blends cutting-edge technologies and sophisticated game design into a realistic free roam world, set in Chicago, where the players must do anything and everything to take down a corrupt system that runs through the CtOS. The creator's of the game say that they created a world where the player will question his/her morality throughout the game, which I look forward to.

Watch Dogs is the type of game that I like to play because you can do whatever you want, but still follow an interesting main storyline in the end. This is the game that I am highly anticipating this year because of its GTA/Sleeping Dogs-esque type of gaming with a very interesting storyline. I have high expectations for this game because, one, it's Ubisoft, two, because of the hype, three, because of the gameplay videos and the trailers and four because the makers of this game are the makers of my favorite gaming series, Assassin's Creed.

Watch Dogs has no specific release date, but is said to be released on the second quarter of the year (April-June) for PC, PS3, PS4, XBox 360 and Xbox One.

Evolve

Evolve is a sci-fi themed co-op FPS game, where you can either work together or die. There are four players, three male and one female, just like Left 4 Dead, set in a large jungle where the players have to kill this beast called the Goliath. Each player will have a specific class, each class as equally important as the next and each player will have to work together to defeat the beast, which grows stronger by eating the wildlife in the area. You can also play as the beast and watch the other players struggle, while you scavenge the "jungle" to find wildlife to eat so you can evolve and grow to the strongest being ever so you can kill the others and win the game. Evolve isn't the typical "kill the enemy and live" type of game, it's a type of game where team work is really essential and as mentioned before, you can either work together or die or in the beast's perspective, eat to survive. Evolve manages to capture the fun in "kill or be killed" which puts the players in a state where they are either the hunted or hunter.

Evolve has no specific release date, but is said to be released on the third quarter of the year (July-September) for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
