ADDLIB's Elgin Bez: The Soul Master of The LAB 3

As promised, we will be updating you with everything that is happening for *ADDlib’s upcoming workshop right? Last Monday, March 17, 2014, I went and observed them at the Blue Light Studio in Kamuning Road, Quezon City. I arrived a bit late but still right in time since most members of *ADDlib were still practising and also stretching for their rehearsal that night.

I felt really nervous because it was my very first time in a long while to be in a studio full of dancers. The sudden culture shock of them brings chills to my back because I didn’t really know what to expect, thankfully I was greeted by one of its members and helped me out.

I was introduced to Elgin Bez - one of the choreographers for this year’s The LAB 3. When I first met Elgin I was actually really shy since he is the first one I will be interviewing that day because I didn’t really know how to approach him. But with his easy going and mild demeanor, my nervousness quickly faded.

Wearing a loose shirt, black pants and a messenger’s hat he was ready to face my gun slinging questions – but really they were just easy questions.

Being with *ADDlib for five years now, Elgin actually had been dancing prior to *ADDlib. He started dancing during his sophomore year in high school till in his College days. He was an architecture student at that time he was able to do both his passion for dancing and also drawing. In fact, according to him, he would usually draw out set designs for *ADDlib’s performances.

But even if he has a very easy going attitude during the interview, that changes when he is on the dance floor. He has a very different aura on the dance floor that is compared to international artists.

He is going to be the choreographer for Soul which is advanced hip hop in the LAB 3. To Elgin, he would be teaching advanced hip hop in which he thinks that dancing is not just of the body but also of the mind, soul and the emotion of the dancer.

He would be teaching the participants to not just move with the music but also feel the music and use the heart and soul.
