"Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone. Marvel is proud to announce Original Sin, the eight-part blockbuster comic event of the summer, from writer Jason Aaron and artist Mike Deodato Jr.!" - Marvel.com
The dead body of all-seeing, all-knowing Uatu, the Watcher, is discovered on the Moon. His lunar lair destroyed and looted of its valuable alien technology. The biggest heroes of the Marvel Universe including Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine, Black Widow and more are on the hunt for his murderer.
This will be Marvel Comics' annual major crossover event called Original Sin, launching in May.
"It's all the skeletons, all the dark things that you never know, all the interesting and intriguing information — not all of it even bad," says Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort. "And it will all expand out into dozens of stories that will cut to the core of who these characters are."
"It's all the characters having to deal with something that really throws their whole world for a loop in a very cutting-close-to-the-heart way." adds Brevoort
Original Sin will focus on two separate groups of heroes. Nick Fury Sr.will lead a team of Avengers (including Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor) on a hunt for the murderer. A separate group, including such disparate characters as Doctor Strange, Emma Frost, Black Panther, and Punisher, will launch their own investigation.
There will be tie-ins to the core Original Sin mini-series which insludes Spider-Man and Wolverine.
A special Original Sin zero issue in April by writer Mark Waid and artist Jim Cheung acts as a prelude, focusing on the strange yet emotional kinship between the Watcher and the young hero Nova.
“It all started with the idea of a murdered Watcher,” he said, “which would put all of his most treasured secrets up for grabs. Once I grabbed hold of the story, it was up to me to figure out who killed him and why. The story was in the air for a few different Marvel retreats, waiting for somebody to grab it. At one retreat, suddenly the whole story seemed to make sense to me, so I grabbed it. It was the crime story aspect that attracted me. I’ve never written a big cosmic murder mystery before. Combining the epic cosmic stuff with the gritty murder mystery part of it has been the most fun. Like mixing Kirby and Steranko and Grant Morrison with some Garth Ennis. I’m trying to throw everything I love about the Marvel Universe into one big story. It’s dark and weird and emotionally gritty but full of action and big ideas and cosmic craziness.” - Jason Aaron
