Wazzup Pilipinas!
A group of Architectural students made extreme efforts to come up with a youth conference to encourage individuals to recognize and respect our heritage or historical sites in the Philippines.
Many are perhaps unaware that the actual representations of our history are slowly becoming things of the past to make room for development and new structures. In the name of progress, we are now losing our heritage structures and are being replaced by modern establishments. What is sad or demeaning for me if these memories of a great history were demolished and flattened only to be replaced by parking lots or parks.
With the recent earthquakes that struck Cebu and Bohol where many historical structures like churches collapsed, it makes me think twice if we really need to preserve old and decaying structures, or it is necessary to bring them down and build ones with stronger foundations.
With the likes of former Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, election lawyer Atty. Romy Macalintal, and Change.org lead Inday Varona Espina, plus other thought leaders as speakers, it is great to know that we are not alone in our fight for awareness and eventual action to preserve our heritage sites.
Do our children deserve to see and witness our past great heritage sites, or is it but right to make room for a brighter future filled with better and durable structures.
Speakers dabbling on similar thoughts and related topics all took turns to share it to the youth that were in attendance to the event called "Demolisyon". A friend was one of the speaker so I supported the event as an online media partner. It gives me great pleasure to serve great causes especially when it is honorable in many ways.
Former mayor Fred Lim never fails to become a father to all of us especially when he included some advise to the attendees that they should focus in finishing their studies before going into a serious relationship.
Though Atty. Romy Macalintal was there to discuss the possibility of a demolition of a political nature, he does have a point that we need to consider. He is right to say that the role of "Congress" - Senators and Congressmen - is a redundant position in government. The governors, mayors and barangay chairmen should be given the top most decision making and identifying the real needs and requirements of their constituents.
Miss Inday Varona-Espina offers us an online alternative in airing our concerns or "petitions".It is indeed a digital world where all people are now connected via the Internet and social media networks thus reaching a greater number of people easily, conveniently and for free.
The rest of the speakers also share similar interests to the youth about our heritage sites and other national concerns of the country. Empowering our people, especially the youth, with the knowledge that will really create a more sensitized community inspired to do what is good and what is right.
And did we have fun at the event? Yes, we did as the speakers also joke around to get our attention.
The youth's attention span dwindles only after a few minutes so I really appreciate how the speakers inject humor to keep our interests.
Whether its a "love team" in all the wrong ways, or we have a peculiar way to express ourselves when we are excited or tensed, all of us should be be engaged and involved in our own unique way.
We should use our skills and talent to contribute to society in any form or manner. The country's hope all depends on our individual efforts.
I supported the youth and their cause. It's like hitting two birds with one stone. We need to encourage the young to wake up their sensibilities and let them know that many are actually on their side towards a more progressive country, and to equally make them realize that our history should also share a place in our hearts.
Thank you for making Wazzup Pilipinas an online media partner. It was an honor to be able to share even a small effort for a worthy cause.
There is no harm in being progressive. Building high-rise buildings and other magnificent structures will encourage tourism and project a sign of a developing Philippines, but we should also look back into our past and respect our history.
