Wazzup Pilipinas!

Close to 600 foreign and local participants gather for the 11th Asia Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL) International Conference at the Ateneo de Manila University on Oct. 26-28, 2013.

Hosted by the university’s Department of English, the Ateneo Center for English Language Teaching (ACELT) and the Ateneo Language Learning Center (ALLC), the conference is going to be held for the first time in the Philippines. With the theme, "Englishes across Asian Contexts: Opportunities and Challenges" it aspires to respond to the changing climate and diversity of teaching and learning English in various cultures and contexts.

The Asia TEFL Conference provides a venue for critical rethinking and discussion of relevant concerns in English language teaching in Asia today. In particular, the presentations at this conference will seek to raise a more informed awareness of Englishes in Asian contexts and facilitate the negotiation of more appropriate classroom practices and research endeavors for more effective policies and pedagogies.

Nobuyuki Honna of Aoyama Gakuin University, Japan is delivering the keynote lecture. Giving the plenaries are some of the most important international scholars in the field--Henry Widdowson of the University of Vienna, Joo Kyung Park of Honam University, Korea, Ahmar Mahboob of the University of Sydney, David Hayes of Brock University, Canada, Ee Ling Low of the National Institute of Education, Singapore, and the country’s own Danilo Dayag of De La Salle University.

More than 500 research paper presentations, workshops, teaching demonstrations, and poster presentations are slated for the conference. Participants from Singapore, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Russia, Indonesia, India, Israel, Japan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Korea, China, and Malaysia in addition to those from the country have confirmed attendance.

  4. It seems to me that each person needs an individual approach and the best thing is to surround yourself with the language as much as possible (music, videos, books, TV shows). I use Lingopie and it's one of the most user-friendly platforms in my opinion, and it also comes with a 7-day free trial. I like to learn spanish with audio books here, and also watch serials and films in a foreign language.
