Ninoy Aquino Returns to the Philippines

Wazzup Pilipinas!

August 21 or “Ninoy Aquino Day” is a special non-working day. MalacaƱang has declared today, Wednesday a holiday as the nation commemorates the 30th death anniversary of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.

The Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office (PCDSPO) is spearheading an online commemoration which will feature an interactive page with a comprehensive timeline, music of the era, infographic maps, essays, and testimonials on Ninoy and his sacrifice, on the Presidential Museum and Library.

Filipinos can join to participate in this campaign, which will source and publish short statements from those who had lived through that watershed event in our history.

"This campaign seeks to keep the spirit of Ninoy’s martyrdom alive as an example of the selfless sacrifice of a man who gave up his life to free a shackled country. Join the commemoration by posting on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #Ninoy or by sending an email to heritage@pcdspo.gov.ph.

The nation once again marks Ninoy’s sacrifice, and your recollections and opinions will play a vital role in enabling a new generation of Filipinos to understand the period of martial law, and the turning point that was August 21, 1983.”

  1. Ninoy Aquino is a man of wisdom that hungers for the freedom of his caged country. His statements and promises to the Philippines have been remembered by generations. It is rightful to say that his death deserves a commemoration, because unlike any other deaths, it symbolizes dignity and courage.

  2. Ninoy Aquino is a fully influential man that changed the views of the Filipino people during his time and continues to move people with his legacy. He's a powerful man that despite of his disadvantage with the people he is against with, continued to push forward and end the wrongdoings of the people who opposed him. We all know who I am referring to right? And with his bravery, I really think that his death is really worth acknowledging, after all he died for the Filipino people.

  3. "The late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” S. Aquino Jr. has been revered as a Filipino National Hero, one of only three to be recognized by the national government." A sentence from Randy Paulino's blog about Ninoy Aquino. All of us would agree that Ninoy will always be a Filipino icon of justice and freedom, but there are questions that always cross my mind. WHAT IF Ninoy Aquino wasn't assassinated? Or WHAT IF he knew about his own death? All the possibilities that we could think of are still just possibilities. We can never be sure of what REALLY happened, but maybe some things were not meant to be figured out and have to remain secrets. All we can do now is to put Ninoy Aquino's death behind us, but his teachings within us. It only takes one person to stand up, so that everyone would follow.

  4. Not everyone has the courage to stand up and fight for what they believe even if they know that they are on the right side. Most the people will choose to just go with the flow and remain silent rather than be in trouble after fighting for justice. Nevertheless, Ninoy Aquino was different. He chose to be against the powerful Ferdinand Marcos and stood for the poor filipinos. If I were him I would just live peacefully with my family there in America but Ninoy thought that by coming home he might be able to persuade Marcos to restore democracy and somehow revitalize the Liberal Party. All I can say is, he really has great love for his country and fellow filipinos that he can't leave them behind without hope. No wonder why many filipinos love him too and it was seen in his funeral procession. Senator Benigno "Ninoy" S. Aquino, you deserve to be remembered and honored like this and thank you for what you had done for the Philippines.

  5. Based on my opinion, Ninoy Aquino should be honored and idolized by us Filipinos, because first of all, we are the one he saved, and second, he was the one saved us from the Martial law. And I will really capitalized my next sentence, HE DESERVE THIS HONOR. Why? Because we cannot be us right now if he did not fight for our freedom. That's how it is, and I'm proud to be saved by him. Are you?

  6. It is an inspiring story about how Ninoy Aquino fought for our freedom. He really deserves to be our Hero because, he is one of a kind. He stood for us, so we also should stand for him because, of his heroism that gave freedom in our own country.

  7. We should thank Ninoy Aquino because he fought for our freedom. I admire him because he is brave enough to fight for us. For us, he is really a hero. :)

  8. Ninoy Aquino truly is a hero for us Filipinos. He fought for our freedom, if he didn't do that for us we probably wouldn't even be who we are today, we would still be under Martial Law and we wouldn't have our "freedom of speech" (or freedom in general). He really deserves a day to commemorate what he has done for us and we should also be thankful for all that he's done for our country.

  9. The sentence in the latter part of the attached video is really hitting me right now. "Get to know Ninoy again". Get to know the one who died because he fought for democracy in our country. Honor him and the democracy that he fought for.

  10. 'I would rather die on my feet with honor.' This line of Ninoy Aquino, greatly shows his willingness to die just to fight for our country. His courage and determination brought freedom to us. We should honor and respect him just like how he loves our country. And we should be thankful for all the efforts he exerted when he's still alive.

  11. Ninoy Aquino is one of the most influential person in Philippine history. He gave everything he's got to free our country from the grasp of Marcos and in the end, he had to give his life to achieve his goal. Many heroes will be born at the future, but none of them will have a bigger impact than Ninoy.

  12. A real hero is not determined by the number of hooligans he eliminated but by the number of people he saved. Ninoy Aquino is certainly a hero and a man to remember. Our society today is shrouded with problems causing us to forget the people who gave us the luxury that they weren't able to savor, Freedom. I am glad to hear that PCDSPO has found a way to commemorate the heroism of Ninoy Aquino. I like the idea that technology is the main component of PCDSPO's project. Nowadays, people cannot go a day without accessing technology, with this it will be certain that this commemoration dedicated to Ninoy will certainly be a success.

  13. With Ninoy Aquino's characteristics, I can say that it is right and just to honor him. Because, for me, this is the only way to show our thankfulness towards his efforts to fight for the country and his willingness to die for the sake of other people.I'm really glad that someone has thought of this campaign

  14. I just thought that once a person dies, he would travel to someone's heart who truly loves him and live on as memories. We live on their memories, like the way Sen. Ninoy Aquino invades our thought until that day, August 21; he died for our country's sake and humanity's freedom.

As time passes, memories fades that's why Ninoy Aquino leave something important; "SELFLESS SACRIFICE WITHOUT A SECOND THOUGHT" so that he won't be forgotten and we won't forget the deeds he had done. No one wants to be forgotten, but it seems that some people think that August 21 as an ordinary day without worries at work or in school, in some cases we don't forgot the importance of this day.

We should at least reminisce the past. Good thing that the government commemorates this day with the aid of technology.

  15. Our past Senator Ninoy Aquino serves as leading lights in modern Philippine democracy with his wife past President Corazon Aquino. Being one of our country’s hero, it is reasonable to have commemoration for his death especially now that many of us have forgotten who Sen. Ninoy really is. It’s good to learn that our government is doing something to remember him. The online commemoration that PCDSPO is spearheading that will feature statements from those people who had lived during those times in our history is a brilliant idea since generation nowadays is allotting most of their time online and it is for them to not just learn what Senator Ninoy did but also for them to learn by heart the feelings and emotions felt by Filipinos who witnessed the great deeds and the death of our past Senator Ninoy Aquino.

  16. The definition of Holiday changes as time flies. Nowadays, we see holiday as a means of "time out"- an opportunity to take it easy; a chance to get a day away from school, work, stresses, problems, worries, responsibilities and a lot more burdensome tasks laid in front of us. During holidays, we get to relax. But little do we know that the real purpose of a holiday is to commemorate something of cultural or religious significance.
August 21, as aforementioned above, is a non-working holiday. Come Wednesday, we had no classes. We stayed at home to ease off not thinking of the reason why we were at home in the first place. The essence of suspending the supposed business is neglected. None of us, if not little, took even a few minutes of our resting time to consider Ninoy's sacrifice for us, for the country and for it's people as a whole.
I don't pretend to be nationalistic. And, of course I would not dare to call myself patriotic for this matter. I hope I won't be called a hypocrite by saying that the problem with us is we lack imposition. We pretend to feel heavyhearted with stuffs like this but in reality, we do not care. We claim to think that former president Ninoy Aquino is a persona to memorialize but let's face it. The truth is, August 21 is nothing but a no-classes day for most of us.
It is despairing to think that we are hopeless when it comes to affairs such as this.

  17. "It's been 30 years. Get to know Ninoy again", the line that should be absorb by everyone. For me, it's not the day to have holiday even though this is his day. We can use that 24 hours to continue the steps of Ninoy until we reach the peek of the mountain. He would be happy if we move as what a patriotic man do, not just sit around and do unessential things. Maybe that's the way that will change everything, but maybe not all. I'm not saying to stop celebrating that special day, I'm just giving my opinion. Do Ninoy stop? Physically, yes because he had be killed by you know what I mean, but spiritual and socially, no because his journey is still moving as the time walks across our world because of us... I hope this is continued by... I'll cut my comment here because this is what happened to Ninoy, he haven't finish his voyage still other could continue this. Thank you. #Ninoy #yellowribbon

  18. It is a common knowledge for all Filipino people that Ninoy Aquino is one of our known National Heroes. I agree that we should commemorate his death anniversary because of his braveness and determination to stand up for the truth.

  19. Ninoy Aquino has been fearless during his time. He did his best for our country's freedom. We should not just remember him on the day of his death but conjure up his works everyday. The problem is we don't even relive him on his death anniversary. We tend to enjoy the holiday and completely forget the main reason for the no classes day. We should not obliterate him in our minds, we should express our gratefulness for everything he has done for our country instead.

  20. As a champion of democracy and a prominent Martial Law critic, Ninoy Aquino serves as an inspiration for Filipinos in steering the country towards a brighter future. Ninoy reminds us to set our individual agenda, and pursue the best interest of the country, especially during the most trying times. I have carefully weighed the virtues and the faults of the Filipino and I have come to the conclusion that he is worth dying for because he is the nation’s greatest untapped resource.

  21. The quote "The Filipino is worth dying for" has remained in my mind ever since I heard of it and the person who said it was never forgotten. Well, how could we forget a person like former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.? He contributed a lot for the freedom of our country, and I believe that it is really right to commemorate his death. This campaign, I also believe, must be continued to the years to come, to make the younger generation appreciate the sacrifices made by a person for the freedom of his country.

  22. Our will to remember the late Ninoy Aquino of his will to protect the Philippines is a good deed. But I'm not satisfied that only a few or some Filipinos only participate events concerning this important day. :))

  23. We need to honor senator Ninoy because he's one of the reasons why we are free and using Democratic way of governing people. Yes, I agree that only few participated the event.

  24. Ninoy influences and serves as an inspiration to every Filipino, giving his for our nation's freedom. We should not just focus ourselves on honoring him in holding such events but we should also be aware of our nation's freedom because it'd be such a waste if we'll surrender our freedom to someone not worth it.

  25. Benigno Aquino is one of the most memorable person in the philippine constitution because of the sacrifices that he made for our nation's freedom. It is really good to know that we still have the courage to commemorate his 30th death anniversary. But I think it will be more effective if we will influence other people to join in this kinds of events.

  26. Ninoy showed how brave he was to fight for our freedom, he should be idolized and should be known for being a hero for us. Children should know him and the contributions he gave to us.

  27. It is very good to hear that in August 21 or in “Ninoy Aquino Day” that they will held a campaign to help remember our hero Benigno Simeon “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. The message of Ninoy’s sacrifice was not lost on the people. Ninoy’s courage touched them, roused them from their apathy, and rekindled their sense of collective worth. The Filipino is worth dying for. For me, I will always make Ninoy Aquino as an inspiration. Inspiration for me to be brave at all times and I will always remember his sacrifices.

  28. Our past senator serves the country on its way to democracy. He died on purpose; its purpose is to awaken the sleeping mind of Filipino people and to fight for their democracy. He sacrifice lot of things, he experienced lot of things, we should return all these things with a proper way and in a good way. We may not have his intellectual mind but we have our own mind to fight for what we need and what we've wanted. We should celebrate and praise him of what he have done to our country and to our history. A nationalistic senator with a powerful dignity to fight for what he thinks is right.

  29. Past Senator Ninoy Aquino is a very brave and very smart man that symbolizes freedom and justice. We should thank him for what he had done for us. We should not consider him as a simple senator, we should consider him as a hero for he is the one who made our country democratic, he is the one who made the Pilipinos free.

Senator Ninoy Aquino, even though our time did not meet his deeds were remembered and honored as one of the best senator in the Philippine History. Senator Ninoy Aquino helped not only the filipinos on his time but also us, for he made our country democratic. To sum all things up, former Senator Ninoy Aquino was one of those people you should make as an example of hope and freedom.

  31. We owe our democracy to Ninoy Aquino. His legacy should continue to the next, next generations to come. Those who belong to this generation who have not experience the time when Ninoy was killed will be able to know what was happening during those days. The online commemoration is a good way to relive Ninoy's legacy and heroism.

  32. Truly Ninoy Aquino build the nation's foundation! We must thank him for what he did and what he has done. Time had limit our knowledge of him as senator, as a father, and as an activist. We, youth, just heard stories about him. We can call him as the present's Jose Rizal! Thank you Ninoy.

  33. Ninoy Aquino is the one who made what we have now the freedom and justice that's why it is right to give him thanks by remembering him on the 21st of August. We should remember him not just a senator who aimed for our freedom but also a father who lend his life for us to taste the feeling of freedom.

  34. Remembering Ninoy Aquino every 21st of August is just a simple way of thanking him for contributing to the democracy of the Filipinos. We should honor our heroes because we owe our democratic lives to them.

  35. The late Senator Ninoy Aquino is always been known as an influential Filipino icon. Not everyone has the courage to fight a battle for your "kapwa" whereby you can't assure your family's and your own safety. There are some people here though influential and with power, still branded as the cowards. He is a man of his beliefs and principles... I hope that Filipino will remember him as a hero and fair fighter. His quote "Filipino is worth dying for" is one of the proof that he is a real hero...I hope nowadays, some politics still remember Ninoy Aquino and try to continue what he had already started before .

  38. Ninoy Aquino is one of the leading figures who once fought for the democracy of our country. He is truly a hero of our county. It is just right to commemorate his death to give him thanks for his sacrifices and contributions to our beloved country. I hope this campaign would be a great help for us Filipinos to remember a great hero like him.

  39. Ninoy Aquino is already a legend to us Filipinos. A person who already made a mark in our history. He, who fights for the democracy , and who died fighting for it. Every year we celebrate the day of his death, not because we are happy for his death but for us to remember what he did for us. I hope there will be other other Filipinos like him who will have the courage to face death in exchange of the benefits for his countrymen.

  40. Honestly,im totally interested about our history and I’ve been watched the documentary about the assassination of Benigno S.Aquino Jr.And I learned a lot to the documentary and now I read this article I’m so happy to had a campaign for Benigno Aquino Jr.so that we can remember his heroism because he was innocent that time before he died. For me, he is one of my favorite hero because based on what I understand about that documentary was Benigno S. Aquino Jr. was kind, friendly, responsible father to his children before he was arrested and stayed in jail.

  41. I admire Noynoy for giving tribute to the historical and patriarchal works and sacrifices of his father to our country. Many critics will say that the declaration of the non working holiday on August 21 is is nonsense but for me, we should reflect on that day. lets ask ourselves, am i wiling to give my life for my country? if yes, how can i show it? These questions will lead us to a realization that we should give honor to those people who sacrifice just like Ninoy Aquino.

  42. His death is our alarm to move, to become a democratic country.

  43. It is a known fact that Ninoy Aquino is a hero to each and everyone of us. We owe to him our democracy. That's why we pay tribute to him. But, is it really about the "deed" that he'd done for us? Or was our President being bias for giving his late father this kind of tribute? I mean, we have lots of heroes but they're not given equal attentions. Just like the OFWs'. Just come to think of it.
