Demeter : Olympian Goddess

There are many different topics in Greek Mythology. I chose to start with my personal favourite “The Olympian Gods”. They are the 12 Gods who ruled after the Titans were overthrown, they are named after the place where they reside Mount Olympus. This is where the gods live and where the council met except for Hades, who preferred his home in the underworld.
Demeter is one of the 12 Olympian gods and goddesses along with her siblings Zeus, Poseidon, Hera and Hestia. She is the Greek goddess of agriculture, grain and the harvest. She is the powerful figure in Greek Mythology. She was the daughter of Cronus and Rhea.

Demeter not use any weapons, she minded the harvest and her daughter Persephone, who was kidnaped by Hades to be his wife in the underworld. In her anger at her daughter's loss Demeter laid a curse on the world that caused plants to wither and die, the land became desolate. Zeus became alarmed and sought Persephone's return. However, because she had eaten while in the underworld Hades had a claim on her. Therefore, it was decreed that Persephone would spend four months each year in the underworld. During these months Demeter grieves her daughter’s absence, and withdraws her gifts from the world, creating winter. Her return brought the spring. And from this myth, we actually get an explanation for the changing of the seasons.

 

We basically have her to thank for our survival on Planet Earth. Since, agriculture is kind of necessary for existence, we owe Demeter big time.
