The "K" Conundrum
Have you ever wondered how an SMS gets sent? Watch as Bianca Gonzales, popular TV host (plus one of the most influential social media personality), traces the path of that "K" you just sent.
We're going to get a little bit technical to help you understand a very valid point.
I would like to share with you a great and very interesting educational video from Globe called The “K” Conundrum. It explains how tedious it is for an SMS or text message to travel and reach another mobile device. We believe that sharing the video will definitely help us understand how it works.
I'm just not really sure if that's Bianca Gonzales or Petra Mahalimuyak (hehehe). I swear I could have watched a Petra Mahalimuyak video and not be able to tell the difference! Bianca sounds a bit off on the video.
But thanks for finally releasing a video that is anti-"K" reply.
Are you among those people who receives the "k" reply, or worst... are you among the ones who sends them out. Are you just that busy that you can't even spare a little more letters?
Some people would just use the "miscall" method...which they believe is a lot more wise! They inform all their relatives and close friends about their personal policy of miscalling instead of sending "K" or "OK".
Many would argue that the Telecom Giants which includes Globe -- some many years ago until the present -- earned from 15-million to 17-million revenues just from the letter(s) "K" & "OK."
Whew! After watching the video, would you still be sending text with just a “K” on it? From now on, I'm going to make sure my text is all worth the travel. No to effortless messages!
Replying to a text message with only "K." is a sign of disrespect. I find it annoying also. They should at least reply with a proper answer or "okay", and at least make some sentence. I think text messaging deteriorated the way we write English because of text speak.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a little rude to reply a single letter "K" to someone. It's upsetting, really, especially when you're expecting something more. Before we make such a reply, think of ourselves receiving that simple letter. Don't you think it's a little disappointing? I think it would be better, more appropriate if we'll be polite when having this kind of conversation. Adding few letters will do. All of us should know what effect simple words can have to people.
ReplyDeleteI believe that text messaging has deteriorated the way people write and talk using English. These are two different worlds. Text messaging is much more limited, therefore, the words we say is within a boundary. Our emotions and expressions are not simply conveyed by a 160-character message.
I confess that I sometimes use "K". Sometimes it's just to annoy and all. But nowadays, I don't except if I have to reply urgently because I am busy.
ReplyDeleteI think it depends on the person on how they take it. Like my mom who sends "K" to confirm ASAP messages. It would depend on the person if it would be disrespectful to him/her. The appropriate reply? Hmmmm... "Okay"? "Kay"? "OK"? English somehow deteriorated because text messaging is limited and it would be cut if you'd send it whole and proper. Maybe those who are "addicted" in texting are those who has somehow had theor English deteriorated. Hehe.
And again we should just be careful in what we send. If ever you're going to send "K" just add some words like "K. Be home at 7", etc.

ReplyDeleteFor me, replying to a text message with "K" isn't a sign of disrespect. -___- It doesn't matter to me at all. In the first place, why would it be a sign of disrespect? It's understood that if a person's going to reply with "k" that means he's agreeing with what you're saying. No need for explanation.
ReplyDeleteFor me, replying to a text message just by typing "K" is a sign of disrespect. What if the person texted a very long message and then you will just say K.? It's so annoying. Instead of replying K, just reply ahhh ok,Gets ko na, un pala un like that. English somehow deteriorated which is very evident. It should Okay! instead of K.
ReplyDeletefor me replying a text message is not a sign of disrespect....its meaning is just the same that "its fine","ok".. i just think that what you just have typed in your cellphone was always appreciated by the receiver, its just that there are some situation that they are busy and they want to tell you that they are fine and consequently they are just busy and thus to reply k.
ReplyDeletepeople should also know their limitations so that it wouldn't interfere with their way of writing specially english :)
Replying "K" to texts is a sign of discourtesy for me.I, myself, really feels disrespected whenever I recieve replies like that. It's so annoying that you've exerted to much effort in texting that person and he/she just replied a "K". I felt that I am not important to that person. There are so many words to substitute "K" like "okay" , "sure" , "affirmative", "I got it! Thanks" and add an smiley to make it look you've exerted an effort. Yes, English is deteriorated and it is very obvious because there are still a huge number of Filipinos who is not that good in English especially in the spelling of the names.
ReplyDeleteFor me, replying to a text message with only ‘K’ in it is a sign of being impolite especially when the sender texted a very long message. It’s very annoying and frustrating. You can reply the whole word ‘okay’ or better add some smiley and words. It will not take you a lot of time to type short words.
ReplyDeleteYes, text messaging deteriorated the way we write English because text messaging is limited.
When sending this "K" message, is sounds like you are not even interested with the one you sent this message. It makes the person who receive a little embarrassed and disappointed because with all her/his effort to try to talk to you that he/she even used her load to reach you with text messages and all you can reply is K? It's cruel. All of us should reply in the most appropriate way like using a proper sentence. Using just that character is too impolite and may cause dismay to the text receiver. This way of texting also cause trouble in the way we write the English language. Most of the people who are using shortcuts like this "K" for the work "Okay" are having difficulty in spelling because they are practiced to spell the shortened words. According to what I've heard, "Practice makes you Permanent." So when you got used in this way of texting, it will surely cause your worsen your spelling skills.

ReplyDeleteAs a user of SMS replying "K" is a sign of dis respect to the receiver, it also gives a sign that you don't want to reply to that person and you just want to end the conversation early. The appropriate reply is "okay". Text messaging have really deteriorated the way we write English because in text messaging we use shortcuts, we remove vowel and many more.
ReplyDeleteIf there's one thing I can't stand, it would HAVE to be ONE word or ONE letter reply. I cannot stress it enough of how much I really freaking hate it. “Oh” and “k” are the absolute worse. I certainly agree that it’s a sign of discourtesy, as for me, it means that “I DON’T WANT TO TALK TO YOU.” Why not tell them directly that you’re bored and doesn’t want to talk to anybody rather than replying “K”? In some way I can say that text messaging has deteriorated the way we write English because of text speak. If people keep on using those texts speak, they will definitely get used to that.
ReplyDeleteMy mom has always reminded me to become a responsible user of the SMS. Using "k" as a reply to a message received is quite rude as you did not even consider the effort it took from the person to communicate properly and clearly to you. The appropriate reply to a message that would merit the word "okay" should be "Alright", "Sure", "No problem" or "Understood", followed by "thank you for your message", or "thank you for letting me know". In the event that you receive the message in the middle of an important meeting or class, it is better to wait until you are available to give a proper reply rather than sending them the letter "k".
ReplyDeleteTo some extent, text messaging has affected the way we write in any language (yes, even in Filipino). We tend to have more spelling errors due to shortcut words, our grammar is affected, and worse, to some extent, text messaging in the Philippines has given birth to jeje and beki-speak.
Reading "K" on a text message is one of a sign of discourtesy to me. It also makes me feel annoyed. I think they should have extent their efforts by commenting or by just saying "Ok, Thank You :)" on what the sender of the text had said. Most of us Filipino's are making the words in shortcuts or removing the vowels just to make the wort shorter, the result of this is our spelling might become affected.
ReplyDeleteI really think it's annoying and disrespectful to reply to text message or chat message using just the letter k. Even I get annoyed of it because people do not consider the effort and emotion given in that message. I really think they should be courteous enough to reply "okay", "alright" and other messages, and add a smiley to brighten it up. Well in a way, I kind of agree that text speak has damaged my English since sometimes i accidentally write using text speak instead of normal English.
ReplyDeleteK.
ReplyDeleteAdmit it, you were annoyed, right? I hate getting replied like that because I feel that the person I texted doesn't care about what I just said. I think a better way to reply would be in a way that wouldn't be too short but not too long. Replying in such a rude manner shows that our ability to communicate is deteriorating as technology gets more advanced.
For me, replying with a letter "k" only, which means "okay" sometimes is annoying and shows disrespect to the sender of the message. The sender puts emoticons and effort to help you understand the message and you replying with just a letter shows how lazy you are. I can say that replying with that manner or the "k" method really affects our grammar and ability to communicate in English in the right way. It also affects our attitude towards communicating to other people using our technology. I can also say that most of our technology today teaches us to be lazy even though technology was created to make our life easier.
ReplyDelete"All of the biggest technological inventions created by man - the airplane, the automobile, the computer - says little about his intelligence, but speaks volumes about his laziness."
I know how it feels seeing that kind of reply and it's very annoying. I hate it but it's not a big problem. It's just a text message. I have more problems to deal with. I'll just accept that not everybody wants to have a conversation with me. In my own opinion, too much exposure to technology can change our knowledge in proper usage of words.
ReplyDeleteIt depends on the person who will read the text message, sometimes it appears to be that the person is just too busy to reply, but most of the time, others see it as a sign of disrespect, it seems that the person who replied with "k" don't even care about what the message is all about, and it's really annoying!!! I think it's better to reply with the full word "okay" cause it is more acceptable and it shows that you mean what you said cause it's more formal.... :) Replying "k" and using such text shortcuts really affects our grammar and ability to communicate in English. Some people are used to this "text speak" and until the point in time that they find it hard to use even just the correct spelling of some words... :)
ReplyDeleteWhen someone replied to me this "K.", i feel intense and disrespected. I don't know why but when I read it and imagine how the texter say it.....I can't explain it in words. Also for me, replying "K" means end of the conversation. He/she may reply "okay" or "sure". Sometimes text messaging deteriorates the way we speak English because of text speak. Making shortcuts in some words make it complicated to understand.
ReplyDeleteI think replying with "k" only is really annoying and can be a sign of disrespect. The sender tries to explain what she need to say in a very long text then she's expecting for a good answer and then she will just receive a "k"? Isn't that disgusting? You're giving a lot of efforts and that's the only thing you'll receive. I think we should reply in a more better way, where you can say any details connected to your topic. I think we should send messages which are worth to be send because we can affect other messages that are really important. Yes, it really affects our way of texting, writing, or speaking English. Because words just like the ones were using were really misspelled.
ReplyDeleteI dont agree that its a sign of disrespect by replying "k" because you were just asking confirmation , in fact , becasue nodding ahead is a sign of confirmation physically present person ,like wise with k.
ReplyDeleteI strongly believe that replying with "K" only is a CRIME!
ReplyDeleteReplying with the letter "K" only is really a sign of disrespect. You made an effort and you exerted time just to text her and she'll just reply you with this annoying and unethical capital letter "K".It just really attacks the emotional aspect of a person. The reply should be appropriate to the text message sent to you and reply with full of manner and just forget about the letter "K"
Some people are deteriorated by text messaging and some are not.I believe that it still depends on the person. If you have the right and enough knowledge to know what is right from wrong, your way of English writing will never be affected.Thank you.
It's obvious that your textmate is irritated and/or super busy that he/she considers you a disturbance if he/she replies the letter "k" to you. For me, it is better to leave the conversation hanging instead of ending it with a letter "k".
ReplyDeleteIn some cases, text messaging deteriorated English. But, not all are affected by this kind of text speaking simply because, some are knowledgeable about what is right or wrong.
It somehow depends on the person who you are having conversation with. For example, if you're having conversation with a very close friend of yours then it won't be rude because you and your friend talked in a different a way than other people around you.
ReplyDeleteReplying with "k" is a sign of disrespect. It's really annoying especially when you sent him a long text message. Think of the sender who exerted her effort and time just to text you only to receive a message containing a single letter. She might think that you don't want to talk to her because you killed the conversation early. They should reply with "okay","sure","alright",etc. Sometimes text messaging deteriorates the way we write in English because some people tend to use shortcuts.
ReplyDeleteIt is a sign of disrespect in all aspects of conversation. But it depends on the mood of whom you're speaking. I think that you should thank the person you're speaking to for having his/her time spend in a conversation with you. Generally, and statistically-speaking, the English had been deteriorated because of text messaging. I don't text anymore, except for urgent issues needed to be resolved. But I believe in the statement I said awhile ago.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, replying "K" is not a sign of discourtesy. Maybe it depends upon on who you are texting and the text message you are replying to. And for me, we Filipinos are used to texting words in shortcuts, right? (although i rarely do that). "K" is like the shortcut for okay. So what if it's just a letter? you still read it as kay and understand it as 'okay'. People would say that it is annoying, you're giving lots of effort and you'll only receive "k" and you'll get disappointed. Well why don't you just stop expecting a good response for you to not get disappointed. Or don't exert effort for you to not expect for you to not get disappointed? it's not that rude, really.
ReplyDeleteYes, text messaging deteriorated the way we write english because of text speak. But it will not affect us at all if we are wise.
I am absolutely annoyed with people who reply with just a "K" ( and sometimes adding an effort by putting a period K.). Yes, it can be a sign of disrespect to the person he/she is texting to if ever that person has lengthy and meaningful texts that required time and effort. Okay can be a greater alternative than K. Indeed, text messaging have deteriorated the way we write English. We can still shortcut our phrases but then again we should always keep in mind our basic english grammar skills.
ReplyDeleteI hate receiving a text message "K". It is a kind of disrespect to those people who will receive it who have sent a long message for him/her. I suggest that it would be nice if they will complete the word "OKAY" and put some smiley for the reader to feel your presence that you really read his/her message. That would be appreciated by the sender. For those who send messages like this, i think they have same attitude in terms of talking to someone on the phone.
ReplyDeleteI totally believe that replying K. is a sign of disrespect to MOST,if not all people. I think that you should reply the way it is not offensive to the texter like "Is that so? Thank you" or whatever you wanna say except okay or k.. Obviously speaking, the deteriorated way of texting was another effect of the INVENTIVE nature of most of the people in the world especiall in the Philippines...
ReplyDeleteIt aggravates me sometimes how a simple "K" could ruin my day. I mean, it's very unusual for me to mind what others say about my thoughts but considering my time to reply or to make such message, that is ridiculous. It's sad that text messaging has completely altered most people's perspective in English language.
ReplyDeleteI believe that replying "K" to a text message is a sign of discourtesy. It's like not caring of the one who you're talking to. I believe something appreciative is the best thing to say if you don't have any ideas left rather than saying that "K" thingy. And yes, I truly believe that text messaging deteriorated the way we write english.
ReplyDeleteAfter many years of improvement in the field of Telecommunication and I can see the improvement really increase rapidly from the first Telephone by Alexander Graham up to these Telecommunication devices like the cell phone, Facebook, Twitter and many other Social media Sites in the internet. I don’t agree that it’s a sign of discourtesy to reply to a text by just typing K because for us nowadays people love to shortcut things just to save time so I think it’s just natural for us Filipinos to shortcut words in text especially when it is urgent. K for me instead of replying Ok because it’s much more time saving to use this and I find it just fine to use this when texting. For me text messaging deteriorated the way we write English due to text speak because many languages has exists in text like the Jejemon that frequently use out of this World spelling. I can say that it is hard to spell to languages at once because Jejemon plus English leads to a disastrous Way of Writing..
ReplyDeleteLet us never judge a person by the way he/she replied on us and always bare in mind that we all have our own business. K!?
I do agree that replying a text message by just sending "K." is a sign of disrespect to most. But there are also people that understand a simple "K." and not be annoyed about it. It can be annoying depending on the situation. I think that "K." message can be replaced by words like "okay :)" or some sentence that means that you agree or something. I agree that text messaging has deteriorated the way we write English because sometimes I do experience that unexpectedly writing a 'text word' instead of the right one.
ReplyDeleteReplying with just the letter "k" is definitely a sign of discourtesy on the receiver's part. Why not put more words and effort in the text. With all this text messaging now a days, it has deteriorated the way we write English. A lot more words are being misspelled.
ReplyDeleteReplying "K" does not always mean that you're not interested to the person you're talking to or being impolite. It depends on how people take it. Some people used it as an urgent reply. But as an educated person you should reply with proper words instead of using "K" why not use all right, fine,or sure. Replying this way (the "K") just prove that text messaging deteriorated the way we write English.
ReplyDeleteIt's really annoying to receive a"K." I agree that it's a sign of discourtesy to reply to a text message by just typing"k". By replying "K" you don't care about what the person told/texted you. I think you should reply "Okay, That would be great." or "Okay, I got it. Thanks." or Just a simple "Okay". Why? It is because the travel of your text message is so long, so you better make it worth it. :) I think text messaging deteriorated the way we write English because of the "shortcuts" we use. Also because of text Jejespeak/text was made.
ReplyDeleteReplying with just a "K" is disrespectful but we should also take a look at the side of the sender why he/she sent "k". Maybe that person is in a hurry or something. But if not, everyone should answer a message civilly at all times. With this given example it is apparent that text messaging has clearly denigrated the way we write English.
ReplyDeleteI find it rude when I receive "k" as a reply. I believe that there are tons of ways expressing that you don't want to talk to the person. If being bored is your reason though, you may rather say it than sending a "k". Text speak somehow deteriorates how we write English. Tendency is, people ought to forget how to correctly spell a word. Wud u lyk sum1 2 talk lyk dis 2 u?
ReplyDeleteFor me its ok... because what if a person is too busy or just dont know what to say to what you texted?? is it rude already...??? and why would you text a whole novel anyway and expect a person to read all of it.... ain't nobody got time for that... so i think its just fine... because eventually maybe you friend will have a better reply next text message :)
ReplyDeleteIt's really rude to just reply a text message with a "K" as after all the effort that the person applied, i.e., me, as I text with proper grammar as much as possible without wasting too much money, a simple "K" just destroys good conversations. Well, not that I am worried by how Globe got that high revenues, since they do provide service fair enough even though the Internet connection part is quite unstable, but it's actually about how much you are able to put in a message; the context matters, yes it does, and with a simple "K", the other person is left with disappointment, seeing how much value is wasted, and also on how his or her value as a person is not understood or how they are unappreciated. An appropriate enough reply would be at least "Okay. Thanks. :)"; please notice how a simple thanks makes you feel more... appreciated. Also, please realize that it makes you seem more... interesting, as it is proof of fluency in English, which is needed in most occasions, being the so-called universal language (well it's easy to understand depending on the original format of writing in your country). Please, do not just reply with a simple "K", make it, at the very least, have a sense of appreciation. Thanks!
ReplyDelete"K" is definitely rude and disrespectful.
ReplyDeleteI mean, whom of you felt nonchalant and not disappointed upon receiving this kind of text message after you've sent a long one?
I read a comment that people ain't got time for reading a long reply hence it's okay to use "K". This is the point of this: That person sent you a long one and then you expect him not to read what you have sent, thus replying with only a one-letter message? Why would it still be fine, right?
I think if the person is too busy then "okay" with a smiley would be more appropriate because at least it has an effort. Plus, you made the recipient smile, right? I mean, that one-letter message without any smileys at all is very lifeless and can be considered an insult to the sender especially if what he sent to you is vibrant and full of life. Words can definitely describe our mood right, so no question.
I believe that this kind of text languages has deteriorated the way we speak/write English because we cannot avoid being used to what we're using in text messages. Here in the Philippines, Jejemon was so famous back then and there was an issue that the way Filipinos write English got affected too. So, there's a great probability that this will happen too. - Maku :)
Never in my existence did I use that annoying "K." as a response. I guess the multitude isn't aware that it is BOORISH to reply such LETTER. YES, I absolutely agree with that fact that it's a sign of discourtesy and insensibility that one would respond to a long and sincere message with just a "K."
ReplyDeleteMaybe some people just want to piss off their "text mate", especially when the preceding text message also pissed off him/her off.
Oh well, now we know how a single reply travels all through those SMSC and BSC. I just wish that people would start being well-mannered (even if it's just through text messaging) from now on.
It depends on the persons involved in the conversation. Maybe some interprets this "k" as disrespect. Well I say I use it everytime I'm busy, when I cant immediately reply on the text message and say "Oh It's Okay" etc. It depends. But saying this to anonymous texters and to the authority, yes, it's a sign of disrespect. Language is evolving AND deteriorating. Nowadays people turned to use those freaky and funny languages like the jejemons, very unworthy to speak with. :3
ReplyDeleteReceiving a text message "K."?. for me, it is showing disrespect to the receiver because it sounds like the one you're texting is kind'a boring maybe it is appropriate to answer "okay" or something that would not offend the receiver., I find it annoying when I receive "K" as a reply, especially when I have sent a long message, I really dont know how to respond with this message. so please dont reply a simple "k" , and instead reply with a short message that would not offend the receiver and atleast show some appreciation .... :D
ReplyDeletein my own opinion, it depends on the situation and the conversation. Maybe this will be a sign of disrespect if someone answers it while the other person needs an important reply to that person.. on the other hand, if someone end the conversation and that person needs an approval to the one he/she was talking , it is good to say "k" to make the other person know that you understand what he/she really say instead of not replying him/her. yes, text message deteriorated the way we write in English, because i admit that sometimes i forget the right spelling of the word because i used different spelling in the text message. But for me, this gadgets are just a material thing don't let that thing forget the things that we should know.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why but I feel so insulted when I get a reply with just a simple letter. I do not reply like this even though I have no interest to talk to the sender or even if I'm busy. This is a very disrespectful manner, I get offended when somebody replied with the word "okay" already (esp when I sent a long message), so replying a letter would make me somehow get mad at the person or just don't text him anymore. A simple reply like "I see, maybe.. (blabla)" would already satisfy me.
ReplyDeleteI practice texting-without-shortcuts nowadays, because I strongly believe that it would help me enhance my vocabulary and spelling (which I'm not really good) as well. Our knowledge in English may be affected if we tolerate the shortcuts and jeje ways of texting.
I personally agree that it's a sign of discourtesy at most times (depending on the usage) , which suggests that other lazy and inconsiderate individuals just discovered a new and a very effective way to piss someone off.
ReplyDeleteReplying something sensible words such as "ok or okay" would be much better and appropriate , so it would not look like as if the texter is a cold hearted and an insensitive human being.
At some point , I would agree , text messaging has deteriorated the way we wrtie English because of text speak.
*write. K.
So replying "k" for some people is a sign of disrespect but for some they don't mind even they received a single letter reply. So it depends on the receiver of the message if he/she interpret it as something that disrespect him then it is her/his own interpretation. The appropriate reply depends on the text you receive but i think the appropriate reply is the appropriate answer to what is he asking. Yes text messaging is deteriorating our way on writing English because sometimes we want to make long words short and it affects the way we write it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I'm not asking for what the symbol for potassium is then it really does annoy me when the person I text just replies "K". For me, it definitely is a sign of discourtesy because if you consider the effort the sender exerted just to communicate with you, it's just not fair. The person could have at least added a few more words or a smiley to show a little bit more of an effort. I interpret very short replies, like "K", as if the person I sent a text message to doesn't even want to talk to me. An appropriate reply could have been like "Okay.Thank you!" or just anything that seems more pleasing to receive than "K". I believe that text messaging did deteriorate the way we write English because of text speak. I was once a victim myself, I used to be a little bit of a jejemon when I was still a freshman. Seeing how I sent text messages before give me the chills and makes me want to use proper sentences when texting. I really don't want to go back being a jejemon and I hope that the jejemon nowadays will also realize what they are doing and how they are deprecating the English and our own language.
ReplyDeleteI think it is better if you dont reply at all rather that texting "K" IF you dont have time for that because you are busy. But if you have enough time. maybe you should comment on your textmate by replying. since i began having my sim card on a new network, I began spelling my text correctly.
ReplyDeleteYES! Because I think it's an indirect way of saying that "I don't have time to text you" or it signals end of conversation. I think the appropriate reply instead of "K" is simply saying that "I'm not interested" or something that would be more expressive and can't pissed off the one who text you. I don't think so because on the first place it depends on the person if he/she uses proper spelling and do not use abbreviations in composing their messages or not.
ReplyDeleteAn answer always depend on the question. Sometimes, its fine to reply with "k" as long as the statement given is for confirmation only. A good example would be the famous "I'm home." sentence. Usually, people would reply with a short phrase such as "okay" or a shorter term which is "k".
ReplyDeleteHowever, this is not true at all times. It may also be associated with arrogance. Replying with this "k" may also show disrespect and lack of interest for the conversation.
Text messaging has deteriorated the way we write English. The cyberworld was able to influence some of the users into the wrong path of language, shortening words into a group of letters and changing the way of spelling. This trend is a step backward in the field of literacy. I suggest that we practice proper English even in this type of social media.
k.
ReplyDelete~I can't say that this is a total disrespect. Maybe it is a sign that the one you texted is busy at the moment or somehow in a hurry. Even though a lot of times, I get the weird feeling when I receive this message, I just think of what (s)he may be doing.
I am used to typing the whole words whenever I text someone. For me this way is better than removing vowels or creating shortcuts including "k". In this way also, I can say that the way we write english is not deteriorated. >:D
Replying “K” to a certain message sent by another person is definitely, a sign of impoliteness for me. Have you imagine the effort of that person just to send a message to you? And so, as a sign of respect, we may reply a message that they deserve such as “Okay”, “It’s fine”, or even “Okay, Thank you”. We must appropriately reply the sent messages to us because it may be offensive for those who sent the messages and they may misinterpret our message.
ReplyDeleteFor me, text speak does not deteriorated the way we write in English because writing a message or a text appropriately may instead, help the way we write in English. But ironically, if we text in the form of “jeje” or those with shortcuts, it may deteriorate the way we write English.
for me, replying to texts with "k" could be appropriate or inappropriate depending on the situation. if that text only needs confirmation, it looks pretty fine for me. honestly, i don't find this topic a very big deal. sometimes i use it, just to annoy people, but it's not a very serious matter. since we are educated people, we should now when to use this "k" reply and when we should not.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree that replying to a text message with only "K" is a sign of disrespect. It is so annoying and irritating because it only shows the lack of respect of the sender. Imagine those times that you really typed your text message with correct grammar and sentence construction, and then you'll just receive a "K" reply!?! It infuriates me! Don't they know that they can already offend the recipient of the message? I suggest that people should just type the whole word, like "Okay" or "Fine". It is more pleasing to read rather than just a simple "K".
ReplyDeleteI agree. The sender of the "K" should respect the sender and should reply with the proper manner of texting. No, there are a lot of "jejemons" nowadays but I think text speak does not affect our way of writing in English.
ReplyDeleteReplying to someone's text with "K" will be discourtesy if you are talking to someone older to you. My dad used to reply my text message with this and i think it's not because he is too lazy to type but for me it shows his authority over me. Also, if there an urgent need for confirmation, then there is no problem with this. I was amaze by the long process it takes for one message to be send. However, it is the machine that works and so there is no problem with that. I think also that since we have pay for that process it is not their lost not even ours.
ReplyDeleteFor me text messaging has introduced to us a new way of having a conversation. Our minds are capable of reading these shortened messages. I think we are still that smart enough to set the boundaries between our conversation through text message and the way we write English, but not in the case of jejemons, which is for me a kind of syndrome already.
Who would reply a "K" to Bianca Gonzales? That's just rude!
ReplyDeleteBut you don't need to be Bianca Gonzales to be exempted from the "K" Conondrum. "K" is never and will never be an appropriate reply no matter how short or long the text is. Each one should follow a "Text-etiquette" where one is expected to act and behave like one is expected to behave in public.
Leet speak or Jejetext is one of the examples of deterioration of the English or even our native language due to improper way of texting. Texting is already a part of our everyday lives, it is more of a necessity rather than want, so let's not misuse it.
Replying to someone with "K" shows disrespect. Yes, I sometimes use this reply but I frequently use "Okay" when replying to someone. I don't think that the usage of "K" affects the way we write English because it depends on the manners of that person, or if she's only used to that kind of reply.
ReplyDeleteMaybe disrespect is an exaggeration because it really depends with the situation. Most of the times, I see "K" as a way to annoy people. I mean, at the right time, when you know you and the one you are talking to are just playing jokes with each other. But, if you know that what you are conversing about is at the track of serious matters, you might as well don't use this because this is where the disrespect thing comes around. Everything depends with the person, really, if he/she would allow the negative things to happen like the depreciation of the way we writhe English.
ReplyDeleteI somehow agree that replying "K" is a sign of disrespect and sometimes it is really annoying but I think nowadays it depends to the people who use it and to what they where talking about.. it's CASE to Case basis.. but I think we should also avoid using "K" as a reply so people will not misunderstand you!
ReplyDelete-Achilles ^^
Though text messaging does not required your full emotion, we have to be courteous to the one we text. Because neither I disappoints when I received those "K." "Okay, Thanks" or "Ok, I will" is better than "K". And it seems like we don't study the basic grammatical rules and sentence unity & coherence. We must have at-least a knowledgeable when replying, as the video produces essential data in a form of texting. We actually deteriorating ourselves when texting inappropriate words (such as Jejemon, Bekimon), though its arbitrary, some articles would have told me that it's one of the biggest matter why we are poor in spelling and speaking in english fluently.
ReplyDeleteI think using "K" in text messages does not affect the way we write English. For me, it depends upon the receiver. But as usual many people get annoyed if someone or somebody replied like this. But for me before you use these kinds of words, see to it that it would not be that disrespectful so other people will not miscalculate your thoughts :)
ReplyDeleteReplying someone with a "K" text message is definitely a discourtesy. Especially when that person you have sent that message have text you in a long message. It would be appropriate if you use "Okay" rather than "K" and put some little effort on the text that you will send. I somehow believe that text messaging deteriorated the way we write English. I think it depends upon the person because some people, even though they use text speak can still write in English appropriately.
ReplyDeleteI think it's not a sign of discourtesy but rather a sign of laziness.Because when people are too lazy to type the whole word, they will just type a letter or few letters from the word. And it depends on the receiver on how he will interpret the text or reply. The reply still depends on the two people having conversation but it's much better if they would reply "okay" instead of "K".As long as text will just be bounded to conversation in cellphones and will not cross the way we speak or write english,I think everything will be in order.
ReplyDeleteI agree that receiving a "K" reply is disrespectful but it is more of annoying for me. I am fond of typing long replies and getting a one-letter reply does not make a conversation any better or interesting. I can even appreciate a simple "Okay." more than just "K.", especially now that I am already aware of what a single text message goes through before reaching it's recipient. Lastly, as wise users of technology, we should not let the different practices of texting affect the way we write English because it clearly has deteriorated people's English skills.
ReplyDeleteI confess that I sometimes used "K". Even though I know that it is a kind of irreverence. Sometimes I chose people who deserves my complete and long messages but for the creatures who were called Jejemons, i usually replied shorter text messages. But sometimes if we received "K" from them, we are so frigid or impertinent. So we should really avoid using "K". Yup, text messaging is deteriorating our way on writing English because sometimes we want to make long words short and it affects the way we write it.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree that replying "K" shows disrespect. I feel sad whenever someone replied to me with "K". But, I don't believe that text messaging deteriorated the way we speak English
ReplyDeleteSending "K" in text messages can be interpreted by the receiver as a disrespect to him/her. Example is that, after all the text that you've sent to him/her and it's about 50 to 100 characters, then he/she will just reply "K". Isn't it annoying ? The fact that you gave an effort and he/she will just reply a single character. Texting the whole word "Okay" or other word like "Got it" will be more pleasant to our eyes. I think we should know that text messaging is also a type of communication and know the your limits.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree that replying "K" is a sign of disrespect especially when that person sent you a long text message that needs a serious response and not just simply "K". It's somehow annoying for me It just makes me feel like the person I texted doesn't care about what I said. Why not use "okay" rather than "K". And I do believe that text messaging deteriorated the way we write english because of text speak.
ReplyDeleteI think replying "K" really shows disrespect. In what way,it shows effortlessness what would you feel if that person tried to text you just to inform you something really important, and you just replied a letter! We can appreciate or even say sorry if we are busy. Just be courteous enough even its just in text. Honestly, I'm guilty about this thing. I'm sometimes being influenced the way I write in English by the way I text. But I think this depends on the person. We should always be reminded to follow basics. :))
ReplyDeleteReplying "K" to someone becomes a sign of discourtesy depending on the situation. Like for example, when I sent a message to my mom, and she replied "K", i wouldn't really find it annoying, since my mom isn't into texting, and since she's a very busy person. But if you're not that busy, and someone made an effort to sent you a message, a very long one, i think they deserve something longer and better than "K". Yes, somehow, text messaging deteriorated the way we write English because of text speak, BUT it still depends on the person. There are still people that does not use the shortcut for words or 'text speak'. Some still type the words as it is spelled. So I think people should not abbreviate or shortcut the words as much as possible to avoid being used to it, thus leading to the deteriorating of the way we write English.
ReplyDeleteFor me there is nothing wrong in replying only "K" in a "texting conversation" it only means that you understood what your "textmate" is saying but it is also inappropriate if only "K" it should always be together with a "smiley face" just to say that you don't have anything against to what your "textmate" just said.
ReplyDeleteK.
ReplyDeleteThe bane of all text messages. This kind of reply to any messages is truly a sign of disrespect to that person. Simply because the person could have exerted a lot of effort in order to compose that message as clear as possible then he/she'll simply be receiving a one word reply with occasional period. Nobody would really want that. I think we should really exercise replying using the word "okay" instead of "K" as it is more appropriate. SOmehow I find it that the way people write in english has deteriorated as time passes by. Seemingly it's a wake up call for all of us to once again study the basics of the English language.
We all experienced this. The reply of "K." is a disrespectful one. What would you feel if you sent a very meaningful message and the reply is just a single letter and a period? It is frustrating. I admit that I sometimes use "K." to get rid of nuisances, but we should still think of what the receiver will feel on the reply. Even if you think he/she is talking about nonsense, say it to him/her straightforward. Not hiding behind a letter and a period.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing wrong with sending or replying "K" in a message. It may be rude to some people but its just simply agreeing on what your "textmate" have said. But I definitely agree that text messages deteriorates are way of writing English. One of the reasons is the shortcut of words and etc.
ReplyDeleteHmm i find replying "K." disrespectful because just like in the video, after text messaging a long message they are just gonna reply "K." I mean?! What's the point in talking?! Where's the essence of sharing thoughts to each other? They should have at least replied the whole word or with a smiley face. And with this, this is a good example that text messaging has deteriorated the way we write English by making the words shorter, adding extra letters and having designs with the punctuation marks.
ReplyDeleteK.
ReplyDeletek(dot)? what? totally anyone who wrote a long message and just received a reply of k. will feel disrespected. i think that using abbreviations of words in composing a message is alright but there is a proper way of abbreviating words, and I think that everyone should be responsible for their messages, responsible in a way that never send a message that will be the cause of misunderstanding.
Yes. I think that replying the "k" is discourtesy because you texted him/her but the reply is just "k"? Isn't it that discourtesy? The appropriate reply should be with courtesy to the others. It should be "ok". Sometimes students like us tend to shortcut a word. It somewhat deteriorate the way we write English.
ReplyDeleteWe should use our common sense, it really depends on whom we are texting, on what we are talking about and on the manner of how we should communicate with the other person. Replying K should be used on the right timing and right situation. Text messaging, I believe, doesn't deteriorate the way we write English. Even though we have our own ways of texting, we still become aware that we shouldn't write the same way we do in texting.
ReplyDeletewell i guess there's so many probable reason for the "K" text. If you receive this kind of reply , the very first impression you'll get will be disrespect. We should be more considerate when were talking to someone in text. We may not intend to hurt him/her but we may be misinterpreted. Remember that talking to someone personally is better than in text. So we must be careful in everything that we type. :)
ReplyDeleteThe K dot reply is a sign of discourtesy, what if you text a very long sms then you get a "k" reply your reaction must be angry right? People that effort long sms must not get a 1 letter reply. We must respect their messages because it has along process in order for you to receive it. You must be thankful because you are still receiving long sms. You must have an appropriate reply and answer all the things that is in the sms so that they will not reply to you a 1 letter reply. Also this has deteriorated how we write English words some answer their own abbreviations in which they got from text messages. I think that a minimum of 10 words of reply must be implemented. So we must be careful in our sms and for our sms to be fulfilling for others. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!!!
ReplyDeleteReplying "K" to long messages is really a sign of discourtesy. If I received that kind of reply , I will really feel unappreciated and not valued by that person. For me, "okay" with matching smiley can be a replacement for "K". Yes it is very evident that text messaging has deteriorated the way we write English because I am also confused sometimes, Thank God there are autocorrects. hhaha
