English : Should Filipinos Be Fluent in It?

"Antaray naman ng agent pang-1st Runner Up ng Miss Universe up ang spiel!"

If the spiel is familiar that's because it's the same answer Miss Philippines 2012 Janine Tugunon told to the judges when she was asked in the Miss Universe 2012.

Inspired by Ms Philippines Janine Marie Tugunon from Ms Universe, the debate goes on,.... on whether call center agents, or Filipinos, should be fluent in English or not.

Should we make it a big deal to require ourselves to become fluent in the English language? or should we stick with, and patronize our national dialect?

Actually, there was already an article saying Filipinos (in general) are great English speakers and here's a proof. This article was also published in one magazine in London. http://ph.news.yahoo.com/ph--world-s-best-country-in-business-english.html

We're also currently the country with the biggest number of BPOs or call center agent, surpassing India, and the most active even in social medias like Facebook and Twitter.

Basically, we are a very "social" country and the primary reason is we do actively get involved and are very expressive online regardless if we use taglish, text.... or jejemon.

  1. I couldn't say that I am that fluent in English, but I can say that I am fluent enough to write and converse using the language. In facing the reality of this world, I can say that English can be considered a necessity for one to be successful. Using the language branches to different aspects: Education, Business, Entertainment, Information, and several more. I couldn't force someone to use English as their language; but I want them to use a language they are comfortable with, a language of their origin, a language where they best belong.

  2. I guess I'm not that fluent in English, not that much. But I can converse and speak well and deliver what I have to say using the language. Yes, I believe that being really fluent in English can help you be successful. When I speak in English, they also reply in the same language so I guess I do influence others to speak in english. sometimes.

  3. I did buy a book before on how to be fluent in English, still I am not fluent. Haha. I think being successful is not all abot being fluent in English, it is if you are competent, compassionate about your work and hardworking and all the characteristics a perso should have to be a success. I sometimes don't and sometimes do influence people to speak in English. But let is not forget our own language.

It is not about being fluent it is about being able. Well it depends if it is in the qualifications of the job you are applying for. Aha.

  4. I'm not fluent in English but I can speak English. I think, we don't really need to be good in English to become successful. Good example is Japan, they're very successful even if they're not fluent in English.

  5. I think Filipinos should be able to speak and understand English but we do not necessarily need to be that fluent. Filipinos require basic knowledge of the language because it is in fact the "universal language" and it is used as one of the main mediums of instruction in our schools.

Personally, I think I am an average English speaker. I think the language will be useful when I get a job, because like it or not, some employers believe that English speakers are usually smarter(although that isn't necessarily true).

  6. i am not fluent in English "like OH mY GOD and i couldn't English it "

speaking English helps us to communicate well to other people ,in other words it connects us, and knowing to write and speak English will help you to understand ideas that are necessary for you to be successful

no i am not encouraging my classmates to speak English because i really love our country :)

  7. Growing up using English as a first language has made me fluent in its use. My parents were likewise raised under the same environment, so using it when conversing at home or at school comes naturally. Unfortunately, there were instances in the past where I was actually picked on and avoided because of this.

Does being fluent in the use of the English language increase one's chances of being successful? Not all the time. There are never any guarantees. However, all things being equal for example in terms of mental ability, work experience or educational background, it does give you an edge over other people who may be competing with you for a scholarship, a job, a promotion, a sales pitch, and other similar cases because it can show how you organize your thoughts and express them for people to easily understand. Being fluent in English does not mean you have to use highfalutin words. It is all in the proper use of words (meaning using it in the right context), taking into account your grammar and pronounciation as well.

Let's face it. Global job opportunities will always be available for those who know how to speak good English, have the right habits and attitude, plus of course, adequate work experience. I certainly try to influence others to speak in English. In fact, I wouldn't mind helping other people improve on their skills. I am not sure though, if many people are open to doing so.

  8. I’m not that fluent in speaking in English, but I think I’m fluent enough to read, write and communicate using this foreign language. I think chances of becoming successful are greater if you’re fluent in speaking English. But you can still be successful even if you’re not that fluent. You can influence some to speak in English but others are not. It still varies on different people.

  9. Being successful in not just by speaking English fluently it is in the person it self if he/she really believes that he can really be successful in life. I my self can say that i cannot speak English fluently but still i believe that i can be successful in the near future. Yes I can influence people by speaking in English but still it is still the decision of the person to speak in English or not.

  10. To be honest, I am not that good on communicating in English. I always stutter whenever I speak in that language. It’s is like trying to say something but it doesn’t come out. But I do read a lot of books and I don’t know why I am still like this. It would really be helpful to be successful if you can speak fluently in English. English is an international language. Without knowing and speaking it, how can you converse with people on different country? I don’t think that I’m the one influencing others to speak in English. I mean, most people that I converse in my mobile phone speak in English language. I really think that I’m the one being influenced here.

  11. I know to myself that I am not fluent in speaking in English. I'm far from being fluent. Being fluent in speaking in English is a very big advantage and edge to be successful because English is said to be the UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE. As much as possible, I would like to influence my fellow countrymen to speak in English for a better future but I'm fond of speaking my own Language.

  12. Growing up in a simple family with Tagalog and native languages are mainly used, I can't admit that I am fluent in the English language. I only improved my English speaking skills because of books and games so I am not sure if I am quite fluent, I am just glad and contented that I know how to speak it and I can understand it. In our world today, without the knowledge of this language will surely be the cause of your failure because most jobs really require people to learn it and is a key for communication so without it, your life will be quite hard. I actually don't mind if others don't know the English language that much, I let them learn at their own will if they wanted to because learning it is a matter of choice but I will be glad to share what I know if someone is interested about it.

  13. When I was a kid, there was that time when my parents made me speak only one language - English. It went on for 3 years, I think? So with all that, and the fact that I watch and read a lot of things in English, I would say I'm pretty fluent in it. I do believe that I would become more successful when I am fluent in English since we know for a fact that it is the most common language in the world today. So maybe with my knowledge in English, I could say that I could converse with at least 60% of the world. Well I don't influence them that much since my primary language is still Tagalog, but sometimes when I'm in the mood, I talk to others in English.

I think im not that fluent in English, but i do believe that I can construct my own sentence, can understand English words. I do believe that in becoming successful, I think I should be fluent more in English. English is our Universal Language. I do influence others in speaking English by starting the conversation with English.

  15. Im not that fluent in speaking in English but I can converse with other people in this language. I can also say that I can make or construct sentences and paragraphs in English. And also I can understand some deep English words with their meanings. English was the most used language all over the world, it was called the Universal Language. I agree that speaking in English fluently can be a big factor in achieving success because it shows how educated and confident you are in terms of speaking, standing and conversing with other people. Through speaking fluently in English many opportunities and doors will be open for you to grab and achieve our goals and success.

  16. I'm not fluent in English but I know how to speak and understand English words. In this generation, it's very important for us to be fluent in English. Why? Because it is the universal language and it would be easy for us to become successful if we know how to speak in English. We should also help our fellow citizens who can't speak in English because I believe that someday they will become a big help in our country.

Starting a communication with English as the language could also influence the people listening around you :)

  19. I am proud to say that I am not fluent in English and not good in English subject. My mom always tells me that mandarin is the most needed language here in our country because a lot of the business owners are Chinese. When they know that you know how to speak mandarin, you'll be accepted right away. But for me, no matter how fluent you are in English or how many other languages you can speak, all that matter are you skills and personality to be successful in your life. I influence others to speak English. There are times that me and my friends trippin' around, talking in English and we're enjoying it.

With my speaking ability, I'm not that good in influencing other people with English language but I'm pretty sure that I can influence them in the future.

  22. I'm not that fluent in English. Being successful in having this kind of language depends on the situation but, it is not a requirement for you to be successful because speaking in English language doesn't give you a profit.

Yes, because most of my friends knows how to speak in English. They are just shy and they just fear what might other people say about them. But, whenever I speak in English when we are talking, they are able to join the conversation with the use of English language.

Most of the Chinese people are not that fluent in English but still they're successful. Becoming successful is not just about knowing how to speak a specific language. Whatever language you have as long as you are deserving, then you can be successful.. :) I think, somehow, I influence others to speak English.

  25. Honestly, i'm not that fluent in English but even if i'm not that good in speaking in English it helps me a lot especially in our English class. As long as we can speak in English we can use it in our future careers. It depends on us if we will practice speaking English fluent. It is the universal language and if we have the knowledge in speaking English we can talk in people that came from the other country. All i can say is it depends on us if we will practice or not.

  26. I am not that fluent in speaking English. The chances of becoming successful depends on your chosen career. If ever you want to work outside the country or with foreigners then being fluent in English is a must! I can influence other people to speak English but people right now tend to be so nationalistic that they prefer using their own language and shuns the idea of having another one.

  27. My God! I am definitely not a good English speaker. Too far from being Fluent. But I am capable of some basic English, good enough to understand. And you should be capable of speaking basic English, required by the society who desperately needs only one language for efficient communication and greater understanding. Sometimes, higher level English is a prerequisite for you to have success in life. But most of the time, you will need other qualities to stand out in life.

I don't influence others in speaking English. They influence me to speak English.

  28. I am not and will never be fully fluent in speaking in English, but nonetheless I still try my best to speak as clearly as possible and trying to respect all rules in speaking the English language particularly the basics of grammar. I believe that being fluent in speaking the English language can give you an advantage in becoming successful at whatever field you are in, after all it is considered as the international language and is the language used in conversing and socializing with other people particularly those who don't speak your native language. I myself do my own share of influencing others, specially the younger ones, to take their English language seriously as mastering it will be totally helpful for them in the years to come. Apart from that I also tend to be influenced by them and learn a lot in the process.

I KNOW how to speak English but I can't say that i AM AS FLUENT AS THE ENGLISH,EN OR THE AMERICANS COULD BE. oF course, wou will be a successful person if you are good and know how to speak in English for MOST of the countries use this as their major requirements. I believe that i am influential enough to influence my fellowmen to speak in English.

  32. First of all I’m quite amazed how the agent answers the caller in the blog because you know what they say the Heart is the core of thinking not the Head.
Honestly, I’m not fluent in English maybe because I hate reading thick books written in English. No Matter how good it is or how many drawing does it have? Next maybe because I wasn’t that adopted to that surrounding whom many people speaks English and also I’m afraid of criticizing me because of my wrong grammar. Lastly, I have a confession to make that I love Filipino more than English sorry but it’s the Truth)). I believe that without communication your powerless no matter how smart you are and therefore I can say that I have greater chances of becoming successful if I’m fluent in English. English is a tool to get a job in an interview, exam or to be used in other countries for communication. I’m really thankful that we have our English Subject because without it misunderstanding could happen and could be misinterpreted.
Honestly, I often speak English but If I’m speaking English I greatly affects others to speak in English either philosophically or natural. I believe that if a question is in English then answer it on English also. It’s a way of respecting for me and agreement. SO start practicing English and surely it will be useful everyday.

  34. I am not fluent when it comes to speaking in English. In my opinion, the chances of becoming successful would be greater if you can speak in English. When we hear people speaking in English we sometimes associate them as people who had an education. And since employers now a days look for those who are educated. Them getting employed would be greater and thus a step to success. But it depends on the person if he will let himself succeed with or without the help of the particular language. I think I had influence others to speak in English.

  36. I'm not that fluent in English but I can speak in English. I think the chances of becoming successful is not because you are fluent with the language it's how you are passionate about what you are doing. Also many persons think that if someone is fluent in English he/she is Smart, not really. I do influence others to LEARN English, it's a universal language also it is used in most of our subjects. It will be a great help in the future. :)

  37. For me its not really an obligation to learn english or be fluent in it.. its the person's choice if he wants to practice speaking in english or use high highfalutin words ... but for his benefit... he should learn and practice speaking ing english so he will not be troubled in speaking to different people especially to social networking sites which you might meet some foreigners... so for your own benefit everyone still should learn how to speak englsh fluently :)

  38. I admit, I am not that fluent. I often stutter and can't find the right words when speaking. I guess English is a universal language anyone can use everywhere. It will be important in conversing with people from other countries. Most of the time, you'd hear me speaking in English conyo style with my friends. I guess that in a way, it helps me develop my speaking in English skill.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I can speak English but not slickly. Everyone should learn how to speak in English glibly because it is the universal language and you will have more chances of succeeding in whatever you do if you know this parlance. In my former school, we have this thing called "English Drive" where in we cannot speak in vernacular unless it's Filipino time. This is a way to help yourself and others to be fluent in English. My classmates and I followed this drive and it encouraged almost everyone in our school to speak English.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think that fluency is a relative factor. Well, to answer properly, I could say I can speak English, but to an extent, I only speak functional English, in a way that I choose words that people would be able to understand easily, and that context matters instead of using forgotten English or impractically so-called high-grade English words, since, as I said, context really matters. Well, grammar does too, and in fact, even in Math subjects; wrong grammar used in problems is one of the most common causes of failing subjects, and I do say so myself. Chances of becoming successful would really be greater when you're fluent in English, as some jobs even require them. You see, it's not about being just proud of your language. It's also about using the right language at the right time, as it is not always that people do understand Filipino, in which case an interpreter might be needed if you really could speak Filipino but not English and the other could speak English but not Filipino. Well, we can say that through being fluent in English, we reduce the chances of having to pay for services made by interpreters, as it's not just about him gaining money, it's also about us having the most profit out of our money. Well, we could really try using English fluently in order to influence others to speak English, as it really could give many profits, some of which include, as I said a while ago, being able to use money elsewhere, and easy communication. In fact, through trying to type English when applicable, I influence others to try it to, as English is fun, however much it does not seem so; however much it might be a drag to use the whole keyboard to type English instead of Filipino, I find English much more easier even though I'm Filipino as I find that there are more keys pressed in the left when typing in English. Anyway, it's really an advantage, as she said.

  41. I am very proud that we Filipinos topped the world's best english speakers. However, I disagree upon requiring the Filipinos to be fluent in English because actually and in reality, majority of the population here in the Philippines are not engaged in jobs that require them to speak in English so it is not necessary for them to communicate in that way. I recommend still, our language, Filipino, for the people to use for us to have a better understanding and communication.

But despite this, I did not reiterate that the English language is insignificant. It is still and by nature important especially to the call center agents because they are the ones who are basically required to speak in that way since they're talking to foreigners.

I must say that I am already knowledgeable in the English language however, i still lack practice. i believe that if i were to pursue law, then English language will be of utmost importance. And by that, there's a high chance of being successful. Also, I could use this language in the future if I got to fly out of the country.

I do not specifically require others to speak in English but I influence them. I mean, I cite them the benefits of learning how to speak in English. Also, I teach them tips on how to improve their communication skills. Reading books tops my list. -Maku :)

  42. You can already be considered as a relevant citizen of this planet if you comprehend the English language and be able to speak using it :) Fluency? NOT NECESSARILY. Yes, being fluent in English accentuates your stand as a person, but it does not really epitomize who you are.

Being successful is not dependent on the fact if one could fluently converse with other people but it is all about the fervent desire and unparalleled will to do something great and be something great. Yes, it is a factor but it doesn't solely determine who you're going to be, one day! :)

  43. I'm not fluent, I don't see the essence of fluency, specially in the Philippines. English, yes, the universal language as we define. It offers lots of opportunities in jobs and social purposes, but we dont need to be necessarily fluent in it, we just need to be familiar and skilled.

  45. I believe that we Filipinos don't need to be fluent in English, we just need to know how to speak in English to express the things that we want to say. There should be no question between Filipino vs. English languages.I will consider that both languages are of equal importance.

The debates for or against English as the medium of instruction and being fluent with it– these will continue for as long as we are Filipinos. Our history and immersion in the foreign cultures will forever haunt us, and make an indelible ink in our identities as Filipinos.

There are successful people who are NOT fluent in English, some can't even speak a perfect English sentence, yes, they exist. But they still succeed in life. Why? Because people, fluency isn't important. Maybe being good in English is, but still, the most important factor is when that certain person believes in himself.

There are instances that we really need to speak in English, but for me, fluency doesn't matter that much. We all know that English is the universal language so we, Filipinos should at least LEARN how to speak in English but not necessarily be fluent. 59. Just like most individuals , I myself find it hard to carry out learning to be an eloquent speaker of a certain vernacular , so must say I don't think that I am already fluent in English.

With English being the widely spoken jargon , learning it would be crucial to one's success. Even in countries where English is not the legitimate language , it is commonly spoken. With the assertions above , chances of becoming successful would be greater if we just simply know the basics, making eloquent speaking unnecessary.

Personally I do not influence others to speak English ,although I could , but I just really prefer at most times to speak in our own lingua franca! :)

I guess Manny Pacquiao never became a fluent english speaker, but where is he now? He is one of the most admired individual of our time. He succeeded without being fluent in English. Yes it may, it may also not.
Considering English as our universal language, I recommend others, especially my countrymen to speak and learn the english language.

  61. I am not fluent in speaking English. Being successful is not only about knowing how to speak English fluently, why is it that Americans can speak English fluently but the usage of grammar is wrong? Isn't it ironic that the ones who introduced that language to us are less educated about the proper usage of grammar and us, who only adopted the language are more educated on the said thing? I do not influence others to speak English because first and foremost, we are Filipinos and we should know on the first place our own language than other languages.

  62. I'm not fluent in English and I admit it. This serves as an evident. :D Anyhow, for me one must know how to write and speak in this language but not necessarily be fluent in it.
This would be vital if you are having a transaction with foreigners. Since it is an international language, this is the only way you can communicate to them. But, like other foreigners just like Japanese, Koreans and Arabs, they are not fluent in it, but you can see how successful they are. It is because they never forget to use their own language, which make them united as one.
Well if I influence others, it depends on my mood. :)

  63. Honestly, and I admit it myself that I'm not really fluent in speaking in English. In my opinion being able to speak in English can help a person to cope up in their jobs specially English is the universal language, how much more the person who can speak English fluently. But for me speaking in English fluently doesn't measure how successful a person may be, but it can help a lot. I myself is not a fluent speaker in English but as long as you know how to speak in English not to embarrass yourself/others but to express your thoughts and encourage others that they too can speak English it can make a big difference. I think what matters most is your thoughts and how sensible and relevant your words are to be able to encourage others that they too can speak in English. And lastly I really think that what you really need in speaking in English (aside from the rules or etc.) is CONFIDENCE.I'm really proud that we Filipinos are better in speaking English than other countries. :)))

  64. We all know that almost all countries in the world are using the English Language, but I think fluency is not that important. I am not a fluent English Speaker but tries to manage this kind of things. Of course, it is okay to use this universal language but let us not forget to love and use our own language.

  65. I really love to speak english. For me, it's a challenge. I am not a good english speaker, sometimes I laugh at myself cause I know that my grammar is wrong, but still i try my best to speak. I think there's nothing wrong being fluent in speaking english just remember you are still a filipino and LOVE YOUR OWN! cause sometimes we filipinos was so amazed of those foreign languages and we tend to forget our own language (tagalog). I can say that filipinos especially teenagers nowadays are good in speaking formal english than defining tagalog words. again.. just LOVE YOUR OWN!

  66. I admit that I'm not fluent in speaking English. Surely, you will be successful if you're fluent enough to speak in English because there are wide range of jobs in the world that is in need of people who can speak English fluently especially in the field of business. Yes, I sometimes influence others to speak English.

  67. Since basically English is the Universal Language, we should first prioritize our own. Yes, you can communicate to others through English, but what's being a pro-nation there, if you don't let yourself speak our native. As a Filipina, I am not fluent in english, but I can understand english, I can speak just a little and just by knowing it. I would influence myself and others to be in, in English language because these would helps me for the sake of my future life someday, when finding a job.

  68. I am not fluent in speaking in english but I can understand and speak the language.I think success does not depend on fluency in a specific language, but it depends on your determination to pursue your work.Of course I recommend others to use the language because it's the medium of many job interviews nowadays.

  69. I love speaking in English, and I can speak in English, but not fluent enough yet. As the universal language, I believe being fluent in English has a lot of perks, especially now that people take being fluent in speaking in English as a big requirement to succeed in your chosen field.
But simply put, I agree that it's not enough to just learn how to fluently speak in English because the real deal is, perseverance and strong will are what you need to succeed.
I sometimes converse with people in English with the hopes of influencing them to speak using the dollar language as I try to learn too.

  70. I would honestly say that I am not really fluent in speaking English, but, I can speak and comprehend the English Language. And I think that it does not actually define our success because I believe that essence exemplifies it. But, that does not mean that we shouldn’t influence others to speak in English because we all know that the very basics are necessary.

  71. The reason that we have our own language is to use it fluently. I don't think that Filipinos should be fluent in English even though it's the universal language. Being fluent in English doesn't define your personality but other people judge you by the way you speak. What is important is that you can create a free-error grammar and you can comprehend an English sentence. We don't need to be fluent in English to be a successful man. We just need to strive harder and reach our goals.

  72. I am proud as a Filipino citizen, that I am not a fluent speaker of the English language. It doesn't matter to me, whether you are a fluent speaker or not, what matters to me is, the skill, the determination to be successful someday.

  73. Even if I am a fluent speaker of the English language, I do not use it in my everyday conversations with my fellowman. Of course if you know the universal language, it is a factor that will help you in achieving success in life. But it still depends on what decision you will take. Influencing someone to use this is not that bad, so I think I can do it.

  75. As a Filipina, I'm not fluent in English, but I can understand English, I can speak just a little and just by knowing it. We all know that these would helps us for the sake of our future life someday, when finding a job. Fluency in English will continue to be a most useful skill set of every educated Filipino. It is already part of our culture and global identity as a bilingual nation. For this, we should be proud. But languages, because of their capacity for communication, must only be used to unite people and never to divide us by distinguishing the educated from the underprivileged.

  76. I am not that fluent in English, but I can speak and understand the language. I think yes, somehow, the chances of becoming successful would be greater if one is fluent in English, since it is the Universal Language. But still, being successful depends on how the person would achieve one's goals. We do not necessarily need to be fluent in speaking English. I believe that learning how to speak and use it properly, and understand it clearly is enough.

  77. Success does not circulates on a specific language and being fluent in it alone, But also success requires the skill, the ability, and the determination to withstand the changing flow of life. Success can be obtained by simply being persevere in achieving your goals and by knowing your limitations.

  78. I admit, I can understand and speak in English but not fluently. English is a universal language so if you know how to use it, it will help you in achieving success in life but I still agree that it's not about the language you're speaking it's about what your heart says. :)

  79. I think i am not that fluent in peaking in English. Learning to speak English fluently is a stepping stone to become successful in life especially when you are working. English is the universal language in this world. English should be taught to everyone. It must influence them to try hard to speak English fluently

  80. Being an eloquent speaker of such vernacular language would be superb but what if you're not? I honestly say I myself am not a fluent speaker of English. You don't need to be a fluent speaker of English to be successful? As long as the thought is there its fine. I don't influence others on speaking in English because I'm used to talking in Tagalog :D

  81. I am not fluent in speaking the English language, I can say. It is really advantageous to be fluent in English for this is the universal language. Yes, unity of the Filipinos is needed to succeed, but that's not everything. We also need to negotiate with other countries and that won't be possible if Filipinos fail to communicate well with them.

  82. Honestly speaking I still lack in skills and knowledge in English. Yes because it is badly needed in our society to have a suitable job because most of our investors are foreigners.

  83. Well i can say that I'm still enhancing my skills in this language. We all know that English has been the "universal language". Being a successful person doesn't only depends on how you speak fluently in English. It also consist of hard work, creativity, manners and etc. Speaking English is not a requirement to be successful but a TOOL to continue living in this very challenging world.

  84. I honestly and proud to say that i am not fluent in speaking English. Filipinos are known for being a country who has people fluent in English but not everyone is. English is the universal language that makes people understand each other. I have heard many stories that many Filipino teachers are offered to teach English in other countries who are not fluent in it and sometimes many other nations immigrate their children into Philippines just to learn English and are paid of huge amount of money which makes us proud of it. This means that by being fluent in English their is a big chance of being successful in the future. So I influence everyone to speak English but not every-time so that you have a big chance to be successful. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!!! :)
